Conversations with History
Dr. Jus Crea & Barbara Giammarino, Clara Neptune: History, Medicine, Baskets, and Plants
Doors open at 6:45 p.m.
Treats supplied by The Bistro at R & R Chocolate

The Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit brings back their popular summer program, Conversation with History, on two Saturday evenings in July and August. Each are an opportunity for our visitors to be invited to a talk hosted by historians of our community as well as to enjoy sweet treats donated by The Bistro at R & R Chocolate.

On July 21, Dr. Jus Crea & Barbara Giammarino will discuss the native history of Wells, from medicine to baskets. They take inspiration from Clara Neptune, who was a Passamaquoddy master basket maker, teacher and an NEA National Heritage Fellow. On August 25, Professor Diane Fallon will share the stories behind her newly published, Pioneer on a Mountain Bike: Eight Days through Early American History.

Dr. Jus Crea was raised with her Penobscot culture and Native American spiritual practices, and realized the healing powers of nature at a young age. She received a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from the University of Bridgeport and a BS in Ethnobotany and Holistic Health from UMass, Amherst.   Dr. Crea has lectured extensively on healing, herbal medicine, ethnobotany, indigenous midwifery, Wabanaki traditions, naturopathic medicine and environmental medicine.

Barbara Giammarino, member of the Penobscot Nation, worked as president of the Somers Mountain Museum of Natural History and Primitive Technology in Somers, Ct. and is currently Community Liaison for The Integrative Health Group and Better Life Whole Foods. As a hoop dancer, storyteller, singer, and activist, Barbara has presented workshops to churches, universities, international conferences, museums, and many other organizations for decades. She is a proud grandmother passing on her family traditions.
